HPV Immunizations in Florida

Women’s Care Florida provides immunizations for women of all ages to prevent HPV.

HPV Immunizations

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States and is easily spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with another person. It is possible to have HPV without knowing it and to unknowingly spread HPV.

HPV Symptoms & Health Risks

There are often no symptoms from the HPV infection but the potential health problems associated with HPV include:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Genital warts
  • Vagina and vulva cancer
  • Other types of cancer in both men and women

HPV Immunizations

There are two immunizations available to protect against HPV.

  • Cervarix: Protects against the types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers.
  • Gardasil: Protects against cervical cancer, vaginal and vulvar cancer, and genital warts.

The HPV vaccination is not a substitute for cancer screening. Women should get a regular pap test.

Vaccination Recommendations

HPV vaccine is given as a three-dose series over six months. You must complete all three doses before beginning sexual activity to get the most benefit from the HPV vaccination. The immunization is recommended for the following age groups:

  • Girls 11 and 12 years of age.
  • Girls and women 13 - 26 years of age who did not get all of the three recommended doses.
