5 PMS Symptoms You May Not Know About

If you feel more clumsy or awkward than usual during your period, it might be because your high estrogen levels affect your balance. According to Mary Jane Minkin, M.D. at Yale School of Medicine, high estrogen levels cause your liver to make hormones that affect the kidneys and lead to fluid retention in your body and brain. This makes it difficult for you to keep your balance during your period.
2. Sleeping problems
Night sweats are commonly associated with menopause. However, they can also happen in women experiencing PMS. In the days before your period, your estrogen levels plummet and cause you to get hot while you sleep. At the same time, progesterone levels drop and make it more difficult for you to fall asleep.
3. Lower pain threshold
Pain receptors more active before and during your period cause you to be more sensitive to pain than usual. If you’re about to start your period, keep the pain factor in mind before making an appointment for a bikini wax or another procedure that might cause pain.
The rise and drop in estrogen and progesterone can sometimes affect a healthy neurotransmitter balance. This can lead to a drop in the feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine. If you tend to feel depressed or anxious around your period, talk to your OB-GYN or general physician about medications that can help combat depression. Or, manage your depression naturally by exercising regularly and improving your diet.
5. Junk-food cravings
Fluctuating hormones and neurotransmitters can also lead to cravings for sweets, fast food, and other unhealthy junk foods. You might find yourself overeating, or eating a higher amount of foods that lack nutrition. However, your period should not be an excuse to eat anything you want. Furthermore, unhealthy foods that lack nutrition may worsen weird PMS symptoms. When your period arrives, avoid buying any junk foods that could lure you into making unwise nutrition choices. Instead, stock your kitchen with fresh fruits and vegetables you can binge-eat without feeling guilty.
